Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) and the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust (UHSM) will join together to create a new Foundation Trust in October 2017 which will be named Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust; subject to required approvals.   Following this, the plan is for North Manchester General Hospital (which is currently part of The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust) to join the new organisation around 12-18 months later.

As a result of this plan, it’s such an extremely exciting and challenging period in the delivery of health and social care in Greater Manchester and one that provides a wealth of opportunity. Our new organisation will provide a single hospital service across the city of Manchester and in 12- 18 months will also include the services currently provided by North Manchester General Hospital.  These changes will make a real difference to the health outcomes and quality of life for the people of Manchester.

International Training Fellowship (under Medical Training Initiative MTI scheme)
Perioperative Medicine (Anaesthesia & Critical Care)

Applications are invited for two full time International Training fellowships in Perioperative Medicine to rotate between the departments of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine. The positions will be available from October 2017 for a period of 2 years. The appointee would rotate between the 4 sub-specialties of general & transplant, cardio-thoracic, obstetric anaesthesia and intensive care medicine including sessions in high-risk anaesthetic pre-assessment clinics including training in CPET to acquire skills in and experience in the evolving sub-speciality of Perioperative Medicine. The rotation and duration in a speciality would reflect the training ambitions of the fellow and would be based on the Unit of training in perioperative medicine of Royal College of Anaesthetists, UK.

This post is a 2 year fixed-term post under Medical Training Initiative (MTI) scheme. The MTI is designed to enable a small number of International Medical and Dental Graduates to enter the UK to experience training and development in the NHS for up to two years – before returning to their home country. Please see your eligibility for appointment under MTI Scheme in Job description before applying.

There is no prospect of a UK career via this route. Participation in the MTI will not lead to settlement in the United Kingdom. It is not recognised for training by the Postgraduate Dean or GMC for CCT.

Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s largest employers, with a wide ranging portfolio of specialty work and a strong academic record. In partnership with The University of Manchester and other collaborators we are rapidly making Manchester the centre of cutting-edge research to improve healthcare worldwide..

Anaesthesia

The Trust provides secondary and tertiary care in many surgical specialties including vascular, pancreatic / renal transplantation, major head and neck, cardiothoracic, obstetrics, upper GI surgery, vitreo-retinal, Uro-Oncology and Gynae-oncology. MRI boasts one of the the busiest renal transplant unit in the UK (over 150 cadaveric transplants per year) as well as a busy live donor programme. We are 1 of only 7 UK centres to offer simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplantation and 1 of only 2 Trusts to offer peritonectomy. The Manchester Heart Centre sees 10,000 patients every year with over 1000 cardiac surgical cases per year. Saint Mary’s Hospital is a nominated obstetric unit responsible for high-risk births for Greater Manchester and last year had 9000 deliveries with about 20% of this activity being tertiary in nature.

Critical Care

Critical Care Services has 40 adult critical care beds (20 ICU and 20 HDU) and serves a large University Hospital with approximately 1000 beds. There are many tertiary clinical services on site offering tremendous clinical experience to the successful applicants. These specialties include transplantation, vascular surgery, major maxillo-facial surgery, tertiary obstetrics, cardiology, hepatology, nephrology, haematology and hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery. There are separate cardiothoracic intensive care and high dependency units.

The successful candidates will join a large consultant-lead medical workforce with 94 Consultants and 31 doctors in training. There are currently approximately 650 patients admitted to the ICU and 1200 patients to the HDU per year. There are two tiers of on-call covering Critical Care only.

Remuneration will be on the StR payscale which currently ranges from £30,605 - £48,123 per annum.

The MTI operates under Tier 5 of the UK points based immigration system under the Government Authorised Exchange Category. The MTI scheme is initially meant for one year and is subject to an extension for another year, after which the individual will be expected to return home. This visa category is restricted to a maximum of 2 years, with no return to work in the UK under the same category for a further 5 years.
