Band 7 Genetic Counsellor Post, Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine

These are two full time, permanent genetic counsellor posts. You will need to have a first degree (in genetics, nursing, or biological/social sciences) and a professional qualification (MSc genetic counselling, RGN, etc) plus basic counselling training of least 120 guided learning hours. You will also need to be a Registered Genetic Counsellor and have at least 2 years genetic counselling experience.

You will undertake a range of genetic counsellor duties including; independent genetic counsellor clinics, genetic register work, pre-natal/urgent referral work, and other specialist and peripheral clinics.

You must be motivated and self directed in your learning and must be able to work autonomously and in a team. You will need good multidisciplinary working skills to be able to work effectively with medical colleagues.

You will be offered support for renewal of GCRB reregistration and to become a sign off mentor. There will be opportunities for CPD through a lively programme of internal seminars and lectures, as well as access to external education and training.

The Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine covers the North West and is one of the largest genetics departments in the UK. The new hospital complex was completed in 2009, and the clinical department is now situated alongside the laboratory, metabolic and research teams. The clinical and laboratory services have an excellent national and international reputation.

The first MSc in Genetic Counselling in Europe was established here in 1992. This has been replaced by the MSc in Genomic Counselling, the academic arm of the new Scientist Training Programme (STP) in Genomic Counselling which is coordinated through this department in collaboration with the University of Manchester.

The department is active in transational research and has a strong commitment to education and training through the 100,000 genome project, MSc Genomic Medicine and MSC Genomic Sciences. There will be many opportunities for you to gain clinical and teaching experience, and ongoing professional development working in this clinical post as a Band 7 Genetic Counsellor within a large and enthusiastic team of genetic counsellors.
