Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is one of the largest acute Trusts in the UK, employing over 20,000 staff.

We are responsible for running a family of nine hospitals across six separate sites, providing a wide range of services from comprehensive local general hospital care through to highly specialised regional and national services.

We are the main provider of hospital care to approximately 750,000 people in Manchester and Trafford and the single biggest provider of specialised services in the North West of England. We are also the lead provider for a significant number of specialised services including Breast Care, Vascular, Cardiac, Respiratory, Urology, Cancer, Paediatrics, Women’s Services, Ophthalmology and Genomic Medicine.

Our vision is to improve the health and quality of life of our diverse population by building an organisation that:

  • Excels in quality, safety, patient experience, research, innovation and teaching
  • Attracts, develops and retains great people
  • Is recognised internationally as a leading healthcare provider

This is an exciting time to join Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust with a ‘new era for Greater Manchester’ starting on 1 April 2016, as the region became the first in the country to take control of its combined health and social care budgets – a sum of more than £6 billion. It means that – for the first time – leaders and clinicians will be able to tailor budgets and priorities to directly meet the needs of local communities and improve the health and wellbeing of the 2.8 million residents.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) was formed on 1st October 2017 following the merger of Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) and University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust (UHSM). The Trust comprises of Manchester Royal Infirmary, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, University Dental Hospital of Manchester, St Mary’s Hospital for Women, The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Trafford General Hospital, Wythenshawe Hospital, Altrincham Hospital and Withington Community Hospital.

The Critical Care Directorate on the Oxford Road site, where the post is based, has a total of 40 beds split evenly between Level 2 and 3 in a recently purpose built unit together with an Elective HDU of 4 beds being opened in January 2018. The case mix is variable reflecting the many tertiary medical and surgical specialties which are centred within the hospital, in addition to the demands from a busy A&E Department. In addition there are the benefits of being located near to the facilities of Manchester Medical School and the University.

MFT is in partnership with the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC) which provides patients and clinicians with rapid access to the latest discoveries, and improving the quality and effectiveness of patient care.  Through extensive local, national and global collaborations, MAHSC is becoming a major biomedical and health hub, providing clinical and research leadership and helping healthcare organisations to reap the benefits of research and innovation to drive improvements in care.

Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a major UK teaching hospital with an exceptionally strong academic and research base.
