From 1st October 2017, Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) and the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust (UHSM) has joined together to create a new Foundation Trust which has been named Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. 

Our new organisation will provide a single hospital service across the city of Manchester and in 12- 18 months will also include the services currently provided by North Manchester General Hospital.  These changes will make a real difference to the health outcomes and quality of life for the people of Manchester.  That’s why this really is an extremely exciting and challenging period in the delivery of health and social care in Greater Manchester and one that provides a wealth career opportunities for great people right across our Group. 

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest microbiology departments in England as a band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist. The Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership (MMMP) is collaboration between Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and Public Health England.

The Microbiology delivered from the Manchester Royal Infirmary site employs over 90 staff and has a workload in excess of 600,000 specimens covering major clinical specialties including respiratory medicine, transplantation, burns, renal medicine, urology & paediatrics. The department embraces all aspects of a modern clinical bacteriology service combining traditional methodologies with laboratory automation and is undergoing an install for total laboratory automation due Spring 2017. It has a friendly atmosphere with good team spirit and offers the opportunity for you to develop personally and professionally. The department is a designated IBMS training laboratory, has an extensive quality system in operation and is fully accredited by CPA (UKAS).

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is the leading Trust for teaching, research and specialist services in the North West of England.

You must be an enthusiastic and highly motivated HCPC registered BMS with extensive post-registration experience and understanding in clinical Microbiology. Experience of using automated and manual molecular analysers and knowledge of the methodologies and techniques involved would be desirable. You will work as part of the laboratory team, providing a high level of microbiological analysis in order to provide patients with the highest level of diagnosis and treatment. You will be expected to assist in the delivery of departmental training plans and competency assessment.

In return we will provide a comprehensive induction programme and you will be appraised on a yearly basis with a view to developing knowledge and skills where appropriate.

The department requires staff to support the department in delivering a comprehensive Microbiology service over 7 days. To achieve this it is possible that you will be required to work within a rotational shift pattern which will include shifts throughout the department's 24 hours a day 7 days per week out of hours service.

You will be expected to work 5 days (37.5 hours) flexibly between 8am - 8pm.
