Fixed term contract for the scheme’s duration (26 MONTHS)

Join a pioneering leadership and management training programme

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust was formed on the 1st October 2017 to create a new Foundation Trust, formerly Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) and the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust (UHSM).

Our new organisation will provide a single hospital service across the city of Manchester and in 12- 18 months will also include services currently provided by North Manchester General Hospital. These changes will make a real difference to the health outcomes and quality of life for the people of Manchester. That’s why this really is an extremely exciting and challenging period in the delivery of health and social care in Greater Manchester, and one that provides a wealth of career opportunities for great people right across our Group.

On our award winning General Management Graduate Training Programme, you’ll learn to lead and manage within the nation’s largest NHS organisation. This pioneering initiative offers you an unrivalled opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in a host of key professional leadership and management areas - from strategy, innovation and change, to finance, leading and developing people, and risk.

You will study for a Senior Leader Apprenticeship and a Master’s Degree in Leadership and Management. The blend of skills, knowledge and behaviours that will be developed and assessed in practice and through study make this a stand-out alternative to other master’s level study programmes.

While learning and studying, you will be earning a living as a General Management Officer. You will develop on-the-job management skills and knowledge while on three distinct placements, in different areas across Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, (Hospitals sites - Wythenshawe, Trafford, MRI, CSS, MREH/Dental Hospital, SMH) North Manchester General Hospital, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust or the Local Care Organisation. Multi-site working will be required so you must be able to travel between sites. You will also have the opportunity to choose an optional placement aligned to your development needs and interest.

As your abilities grow, you will take responsibility for managing/leading a team and for leading projects and service reviews.

Along the way, you will have access to a range of personal development opportunities and masterclasses. You’ll also enjoy the dedicated guidance and support of a scheme coordinator, a buddy who has graduated from the scheme, a senior mentor and a placement manager.

By the time you complete the programme, you will have contributed to the delivery of performance targets and activity, governance and risk, finance, quality and standards, and service improvement through change and innovation. You will be ready for a career as an inspirational manager and leader.

To join us on the programme, you’ll need a minimum of 2:1 in any degree subject. Focused, resilient and forward thinking, you are keen to make a difference to our services for the benefit of our patients.

We’ll look for excellent skills in communication, analysis/problem solving, leadership and meeting deadlines along with the ability to work as part of a team. Working innovatively and demonstrating the NHS values are also important.

We would expect to see all of this evidenced in the supporting statement of your application

Desirably, you will have relevant work experience, preferably in the health or voluntary sector and be able to show political awareness and an understanding of the NHS.Equally important is your willingness and potential to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviours to become a first class, resilient and inspirational General Manager and Leader.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an Assessment Centre and Interview day on 13TH March 2018.

15 people will then be offered places to begin the programme on 30th April 2018.
